On the outskirts of Chengdu City, the Dujiangyan Panda Valley is located in Qingchengshan Town. Covering an area of 50 hectares, Dujiangyan Panda Base has the right climate and nature environment for the giant panda with vast bamboo forest coverage and lovely scenic surroundings. The Dujiangyan Panda Base integrates Visitors Center, Research Center and residences for visiting researchers. At present, there are more than 50 giant pandas and red pandas living at there. The Panda Base requires a big improvement of the accessibility and activity spots focusing on the main entry area and adjacent spaces that connect with the main circulation and new paths. The renovation bring new values to the site, with fundamental integration of the site ecology, reinforcement of the natural resources and being site and user oriented to consolidate a new image for the park.
We start working from the existing conditions of the Panda Base to upgrade it accordingly to the future needs of visitors but also to catalyze all the potentials of the site. The scope of work is the renovation of the existing main entry, extending it to create a new venue in the site, and also to improve the circulation routes in the visitor’s area extending it and adding new functions and scenic areas. We want to make the Panda Base to become a memorable place in a natural ecological location offering learning and entertainment for the visitors. The design takes into account 5 main key strategies.
We want the Panda Base to become a destination attracting more people, and also a discovery and entertainment place where to learn about the Giant Panda. The new spaces bring a new identity to the place, connecting with the Giant Panda cultural values, with nature and the ecology as main asset.
